Soulful ..

Wasn't too sure myself if 'Music is language independent' (as is often quoted), until I listened to the below from the movie Karuthamma. Soulful rendering by Smt. Swarnalatha (won the national award for this song and sadly, passed away last week) goes beyond limitations that language and words pose on music. Results from a few people who I tried this song on (who did not know any Tamil and had not heard this song before) has convinced me that there is at least some Music that is language independent

If you don't know any Tamil and have not heard this song before and feel moved by this song,let me know.In the spirit of empirical skepticism let me know if it does not 'move' you as well.

    I completely agree, music has no language. One of my fav song is a kannada song which i dont understand but i find it so refreshing to listen too.

A Southern Music

Two years back I had hardly heard of T M Krishna and two years on, a day does not pass by without listening to his awesome music(I deliberately excluded divine and soul-stirring out of respect to TMK's public views of his own music although I would argue that these are the most fitting adjectives). And few weeks back I had the ultimate fortune of hearing him live in Coimbatore amidst an august audience that gathered to collect funds for Udalveli, a charity that is doing great work with children and theatre.  Here is a short attempt at describing my experience on that wonderful day !! The setting was fit-for-purpose - an auditorium of a higher secondary school with a peaceful, Gandhiji's porbandar ashram like cleanliness and ambience and welcoming warm organisers (volunteers from Udalveli Arts foundation). Associations .. (Aw !!!!)

First came the apartment association (which the founders claim God/s created in his/their own image) ,soon followed by apartment association founders's (AAF) wives association (gossip being the most harmless of their objectives) and then the Senior Citizen's association (yes , AAF's parents !!) and smaller and less potent kid's associations. The left outs obviously wanted their cut of the pie (Oh Yeah , there is always a pie !!) to found their own and then the mushrooming of the regional associations started .. Bongs , Tamils , Mallus , Gults (they were the first to form an association in the literal sense to share Gult movie CD and spicy food but not the first to call it an "association") followed in quick succession ( in the same order as above). There is still scope for that apocalyptic monster - an association of the association office bearers so that all associations are co-ordinated by a general sense of purpose !!
